Background/Discussion
After a thorough recruitment and selection process, consisting of physical agility testing and interviews,
the aforementioned individuals are being brought forward to join the ranks of the Elk River Fire
Department as probationary on-call firefighters. The most recent recruitment brought forward 24
applicants, of which 17 candidates were interviewed. Nine candidates moved forward to complete a
background check and medical screening.
The nine probationary firefighters will begin the Elk River Fire Academy,an in-house training program,
upon approval that will prepare them for state certification testing. Modeled after a similar program in
Anoka County, the program is designed to teach not only the fundamental skills of firefighting but will
also cover topics such as pride/honor,local governance, county operations, and other pertinent skills.
Upon completion of the academy, graduates will be administered the Oath of Office and will receive their
badges.
Financial Impact
Probationary firefighters will be compensated $8/hour in accordance with the city's pay plan.
