Authorization to Purchase of Building and Environmental
Vehicle
The Building Environmental Department has five vehicles for the Building Inspectors and
one for environmental staff. Unimproved areas at constructions sites dictate a need for the
inspectors' vehicles to have good clearance and 4-wheel drive. Traditionally the inspectors'
vehicles have been 1/2 ton pickups, and the environmental staff vehicle has been a handed-
down squad car. The five inspectors' vehicles are kept for ten years by the Building
Department and then they are given to the Street Department.
At a recent fleet meeting, the Street Department indicated that this current arrangement
leaves them with more 1/2 ton pickups than they currently have a need for. Additionally, the
Building and Environmental Department has a need for a reliable vehicle that can
accommodate more than two people comfortably for going to seminars, etc.
Staff is recommending the purchase of a Ford Explorer to replace the Building Inspector
vehicle this rotation. The Explorer has the clearance and 4-wheel drive that is needed, four
doors and at a little less than $21,000. It is well within the amount the Department budgeted
for a new vehicle which was $24,000. The specifications from the State Bid for the Explorer
and other comparable vehicles are attached to this memo.
