Background/Discussion
The City Council serves as the Canvassing Board for city elections.
Primary Election Canvassing Board Meeting
Per state law, the Council must meet to canvass and declare city election results on the second or third
day after the primary. The canvass may only be held on the second day after a primary if the county
auditor agrees to review primary voting statistics within a time that permits the canvass to be conducted
on that day. Staff requests that the primary canvass be held on the third day, which would be Friday,
August 15 in order to have time to process the results and prepare for the canvassing meeting. Past
practice has been to hold the meeting at 8:00 a.m.
General Election Canvassing Board Meeting
Per state law, the city needs to canvass and declare city election results within 3-10 days after the general
election. There is no regular Council meeting scheduled for this timeframe. Staff suggests scheduling the
meeting at 8:00 a.m., Friday,November 7, 2014.
At least three members must be in attendance at the Canvassing Board meeting. The meetings should
take no more than a few minutes.
