New Motor and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for Well#5
BACKGROUND:
On Tuesday,April 13th it was determined by ERMU and E.H. Renner staff that the well motor
for Well#5 had shorted out.
DISCUSSION:
The well motor at Well#5 shorted out prematurely. The motor was rebuilt 2 years ago. Though
we are not sure exactly why this happened, we do believe that the soft start is partially to blame.
The soft starts are inherently bad for submersible motors. With the upcoming summer, and no
doubt increasing demand for water,we need to install a new well motor as soon as possible. It's
our intent to replace the soft start with a VFD as the VFD has programming built into it so the
chances of this happening again are much slimmer. We also have to purchase a dV/dT filter
because the well motor is approximately 300 feet away from the power source.
We are conducting assessments on Wells 2, 3, 4, and 6 to replace the soft starts with VFDs
before any damage is done to the motors that are currently in place. Wells 7, 8, and 9 already
have VFDs installed. We'll come back to the commission in June with a recommendation.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Staff requests Commission approval for the purchase and installation of a new well motor, VFD,
and dV/dT filter for Well #5.
