Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) for Wells
BACKGROUND:
Last month Well#5 shorted out and the Commission approved the purchase of a new well motor, VFD,
and dV/tV filter.Management said they would report back with an update for the rest of the wells that do
not have VFDs and make a recommendation on replacing the rest of the soft starts with VFDs.
DISCUSSION:
The Water Department is looking into upgrading Wells 2, 3,4,and 6 with variable frequency drives
(VFDs).We had an electrician and VFD company give us an idea of what it would cost to upgrade every
well that currently has a soft start and needs a VFD. We had originally budgeted$200,000 for Well#4. At
the end of 2013 it was approved that we could use the money to fix things at Well#7. We also used some
of that money to buy the new VFD,well motor,and dV/tV filter for Well#5.

After using some of the budgeted money for the repairs that have been made so far to Well#7 and Well
#5,we still have $93,724.03 in the budget to purchase and install VFDs in the remaining wells.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Staff requests the Commission approve the purchase and installation of VFDs for the remaining wells.
