SUBJECT: Orono Park Master Plan

Request
With the construction of the public safety facility,Orono Road will be closed permanently.
This provides us with an opportunity to review and revise the Orono Park/Athletic
Complex Master Plan, a goal for 2002.
Attached are some staff suggestions for changes to Orono Park. These include closure of
Orono Road just past the softball entrance, closure of Gary Street with creation of an
expanded parking area,a relocated parking area from the beach front,and conversion of that
area to grass.
The Commission should also comment about the status of the E & 0 property that was
previously committed to the Minnesota Sports Federation. Does the Commission want this
to remain as permanent open space,or would the Commission be willing to entertain some
type of community use such as a YMCA,an arts building,a building for the Land of Lakes
Boys Choir, etc.
Recommendation
Staff requests that the Commission provide additional input to the draft Orono Park Master
Plan. A revised plan will be submitted for review at the March meeting.
