Elk MEMORANDUM
River
TO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Michele McPhersotP5irector of Planning
DATE: December 28, 1999
SUBJECT: Planning Retreat— Community Involvement
Request
The Commission is asked to brainstorm ways to increase community involvement and
partnerships for park development and stewardship purposes.
Analysis
Commissioners Huberty and Reitsma attended the 1999 Minnesota State Recreation
Conference. At this conference, community involvement and partnerships was one of
• the topics of discussion. Commissioner Reitsma suggested that the Commission be
more proactive in marketing and creating partnerships for park development and
stewardship.
A few ideas for the Commission to consider are:
1. Adopt— a — park programs
2. Regular park development features in the City's quarterly newsletter, The
Current
3. Elk River Star News coverage at park openings or dedications
4. Monthly column by staff or Commissioners in the Elk River Star News?
5. Continuation of the Volunteer Appreciation picnic
6. Videotape footage of park development activities for broadcasting on the
City's cable channel
7. Advertise park development in the Community Recreation brochure
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Commission review the above ideas, brainstorm additional
ideas and direct staff as needed to implement all or some of the ideas in 2000.
