.lk River MEMORANDUM
TO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Michele McPherson, Director of Planning
DATE: June 14, 2000
SUBJECT: Trail Crack Filling
Commissioner Dave Anderson has submitted the attached information regarding
trail crack filling which helps prevent the erosion of trail material. This service
has been provided, utilizing the Youth Sentence-To-Serve crews. The annual
material cost appears to be $200 this year. Again, this is a maintenance issue,
so no funds from park dedication can be utilized for this activity.
Recommendation
• Staff recommends that the Commission support Commissioner Dave Anderson's
request to continue the crack filling activities that have occurred in previous
years.

Trail Crack Filling
•
The youth STS crew has done paved trail crack filling the last four years.
They use a cheap caulking grade of driveway crack filler and cover it with
T.P. This material has no elastomeric properties, but does a good job of
preventing loss of trail base material caused by rain and ants. Consequently
our trails do not have the characteristic dips at each crack like so many trails
do.
I would like to see this program continue until we can find an alternative
solution. The annual material cost will increase as our miles of trail
increase. The cost this year should be about $200. I am working with the
crew to get more production out of their materials. The labor cost is zero.
