Background/Discussion
Katie Shatusky has applied for a special event permit for the Thumbs Up High 5K walk/run on Saturday,
October 4, 2014. The run begins at 10:00 a.m. A post-race festival will take place in the Rivers Edge
Commons Park and city-owned lower level parking lot from 11:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. including a
motivational speaker, live music, face painting, bounce house, and other family friendly activities. The
purpose of the event is to raise mental health and suicide awareness.
A majority of the Thumbs Up High 5K events will take place in the park. Events held entirely on park
property do not require a special event permit;however, a 5K is included as part of the event and requires
a permit.
In preparation for the run on Saturday, the group has also invited the public to a Chalk Up the 5K Route
event on Friday, October 3, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. The group would like people to come and draw or write
inspirational messages to the runners on the sidewalks along the route.
