Action Requested
Approve,by motion, a design plan for the wayfinding signage program for the city.
Background/Discussion
The City Council has an identified goal of city beautification. The Council and staff have committed a
significant amount of funds and resources to community branding, standardization of communication,
and beautification. Along with communication,the city has had an inconsistent and disjointed effort for
informational signage to direct residents and visitors to parks, facilities, and points of interest.
In an attempt to create a long-term, standardized plan that incorporates the Council goals for
beautification and to improve wayfinding the Council approved a contract with Visual Communications
to develop a long-term wayfinding plan.
For the project, two groups were formed, one of staff including representatives from the Community
Operations and Development,Parks and Recreation, Streets Division, Engineering,Police, and
Administration and a fact-finding group with key community representatives including:
• Dave Anderson,Parks and Recreation Commission Chair
• Debbi Rydberg, Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce
• Jennifer Wagner,Rivers Edge Downtown Committee
• Barb Burandt, Council Member
Visual Communications met with both groups to receive direction/ideas on design. Direction was given
to create signage that represented Elk River and its vibrant future in a timeless, hip, clean,urban,and
concise design.
Design options were presented and then condensed down to two by taking elements from all designs.
The designs include gateway/entrance signs, signature park signs, neighborhood park signs, and
wayfinding signage.
Designs were then presented to the public using the following resources:
• Public Open House held on August 28, at City Hall.
• Facebook postings on sites including Elk River City Government,Parks and Recreation,and
Economic Development that resulted in over a hundred comments.
Results from these resources overwhelmingly decided on Option#2.

The designs presented are only a representation of the full signage plan. The remaining signs will be
developed consistent with the primary signage approved. The plan would be phased in over the next few
years as funding is budgeted as signs need replacement. The sign plan includes specifications so some
signs could be locally sourced or produced in-house.
