ERMUSR 10-21-2014Elk River Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING TO: FROM: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Eric Volk - Water Superintendent John Dietz — Chair Al Nadeau — Vice Chair Daryl Thompson — Trustee MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER: October 21, 2014 6.1e SUBJECT: Staff Update DISCUSSION: • Delivered 13 new residential water meters. • Sealed the water meter and took curb stop ties from 7 water services. • Turned on 3 water services and 1 electric service. • Turned off 3 water services and 1 electric service. • Went on 9 Service calls. • Completed 25 BACTI/Total Chlorine Residual Samples; all confirmed negative for Coliform Bacteria. • Completed 20 routine fluoride samples. All samples met MDH standards. • 280 fire hydrants have had maintenance performed on them so far this summer. • One Way Building Services has completed the Verizon Wireless antenna installation. The punch list items have been taken care of and they are ready for the final inspection. We're getting close to starting on the Sprint 2.5 upgrade on the Auburn, Freeport, and Johnson Street towers. • We've been working with our control company to improve our SCADA system dependability. • The water department finished fire hydrant maintenance for the season. In total they performed maintenance on 200 public fire hydrants and 130 private hydrants. With Mike Langer's lead, we've started repairing all of the hydrants and gate valve risers that have been identified to need repairs. • Pete Neilsen has completed 723, of the over 800 missing curbstop ties, that are missing from our curbstop ties catalog. • Angela Hauge has been working on getting coordinates for the missing gate valves and fire hydrants into our GIS mapping system, once complete she'll begin working on the maps that are missing in the mapping system. • The water department excavated and repaired a damaged fire hydrant isolation valve. We had the part on hand and we used our own equipment to excavate the valve. By doing this the water department saved approximately $5,000. wm r3 Page 1 of 2 Reliable Public Power Provider 119 POWERED 8Y NATURE] P O W E R E D T o S E R V E The water department worked on the hydrant in Handke Pit for the Parks Department. They've had a problem with it freezing up when they're done using it for flushing. We cleaned out the drain and reinsulated the bottom of the hydrant. Construction has begun on the new water main from Well #7 to the intersection of County Rd 12 and County Rd 13 (Twin Lakes Parkway). The new water main will improve our ability to push water to Natures Edge Business Park. The project will be completed by November 1St Attended the Minnesota American Water Works Association (MN AWWA) Annual Conference September 10 -12 in Duluth, MN. The education report is attached. Also presented on how well the ERMU Private Hydrant Program is doing. Water Operators are also required to obtain a certain amount of CEUs each year. WHAT INFORMATION WAS LEARNED BY ATTENDING Eric attended blocks of instruction pertaining the latest testing requirements by the MDH fire flow testing SCADA Asset Management Metering, frozen water services and arc flash safety. Eric also did a presentation on how well the private hydrant maintenance program has been working for ERMU and its customers. WAS INFORMATION CONVEYED TO SUPERVISOR AND CO- WORKERS AND TO WHO Eric brought back some good ideas for maintenace to our water operators.
