Certified Local Government Grant for Additional
Archaeological Work
The city's Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) applied for and has been granted a
$10,000 Certified Local Government Grant to conduct further archaeological investigation.
A letter from the Minnesota Historical Society announcing the award of this grant is
attached to this memo.
The Archaeological survey work described in the grant application is a follow up to the
archaeological modeling and literature search started by Dr. Rothaus of Saint Cloud State
University last year. That work will be finished shortly. The new project will allow actual
test digging as a precursor to a full archaeological dig in Elk River hopefully some dme in the
future. Staff is recommending that the city retain its relationship with Dr. Rothaus for this
next round of archaeological work.
The match for the $10,000 grant included $5,000 that the City Council budgeted for the
HPC and in-kind services such as city staff rime and volunteer rime by the HPC. On behalf
of the HPC, I would like to thank the Elk River City Council for their support for this
important effort.

Grants Review Com!rfittee reviewed the city's Certified Local Government grant
application. Their recommendation was to approve a grant of $10,000 for the
archaeological survey project.
The Grants Office is in the process of preparing the Certified Local Government Grant
Agreement for your project. This will be forwarded to project director Rebecca Haug
when completed.
