Appoint,by motion, an acting mayor for 2015.
Background/Discussion
Per city code and state law, the Council is required to appoint an acting mayor. The acting mayor
performs the duties of mayor during disability or absence of the mayor, or if there is a vacancy in the
office, or until a successor has been appointed.
Although all Councilmembers are eligible for appointment at any time, our past practice is a rotation
from Wards 4-1-3-2,which corresponds with the election terms and allows for a year of experience for
new Councilmembers before assuming the acting role.

In 2014, the acting mayor position changed due to the Ward 1 seat vacancy. Please note that
Councilmember Westgaard moved Wards following redistricting for the 2012 election. At the January 6,
2014 meeting,the Council expressed consensus to return to the original rotation which would best work
for 2016.
To return to our past practice,it is recommended to appoint Councilmember Burandt as acting mayor for
2015 and return to the 4-1-3-2 Ward rotation in 2016.
