Memorandum
River
To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Date: January 14,2014
Subject: Director's Report
This report is a monthly highlight of our Department's activities informing the Commission on
items related to collaborations, strategic planning, staff changes/ development, and park operations
Houlton Farm Property Acquisition
I am proud to report that we are now owners of the Houlton farm property conservation area. We
have a locked gate at the main street entrance. We have no plans for the property this winter except
to work on the planning requirements for the new property. We do need to decide how we plan to
demolish/move the house and others structures on the site. City Council approved Jerry Olsen as
the City Council representative on the Planning Committee. The list of committee members will
soon be presented to City Council for final approval.
Rivers Edge Commons Park Expansion
The design services to expand Rivers Edge Commons Park will begin later this month. This was
discussed and approved last month by the Commission. This project is in the 2015 Park
Improvement Fund. The concepts will be presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission later
this winter preferably by February, so that the final design and construction costs can be determined.
City Council did approve to replace the pavers in the crosswalk and the upper half of the alley.
Annual Volunteer Recognition Program
The annual Volunteer Recognition Program has been scheduled for Thursday, March 5, 2015 at
Rockwood's. Please save the date and plan on attending. Invitations will go out by early February
with details.
Skate Park and Park Improvement Fund
Design services for the skate park at Orono Park will also be reviewed in the coming month. A
budget of$35,000 was approved for design in the Park Improvement Fund. A list of projects
approved by the Commission and City Council is attached.
Riverfront Concert Series 2015
The Bank of Elk River will sponsor the Concert Series for 2015. Staff is still working on the line up
but it is promised to be the highest quality concert venue with up to five new bands.
