(1) ty of � MEMORANDUM lkRiver TO: Park and Recreation Commission FROM: Stephen Wensman, Planning Intern DATE: May 13, 1998 SUBJECT: Country Crossings 1st Addition Classification Conservancy Park Description Country Crossings is approximately 7 acres, relatively flat, and consisting of primarily Oak woods. The site provides a buffer between the neighborhood on the South and Orono Parkway and the County Fair Grounds to the North. The site is bound by residential development on the South and east, and • Orono Parkway to the North, and Joplin Avenue on the West. Hudson Lane bisects the site. On the north side of Orono Parkway is a bike path, and on the south side, adjacent to the park, is a concrete sidewalk. The under-story vegetation was recently cleared away and many dead trees removed which has opened the tree canopy allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor. Site Issues • Buffering • Recreation • Preservation • Park signage Concept A This concept enhances the vegetative buffer with native under-story species and some conifers in the canopy openings. Park signs flank Hudson Lane to welcome pedestrians into the park and to mark ownership of the park (which may reduce dumping and garbage in the park). A mulch trail leads pedestrians into the forest with benches and plant markers informing them • of what species are present. Also native woodland wildflowers are located at 13065 Orono Parkway • P.O. Concept B This concept primarily uses the park as a vegetative buffer with additional under-story vegetation and conifers. Currently kids play in the park making bike and walking trails and forts, and this activity could continue. Along Orono Parkway, there are some short paths into the woods to benches. A children's play structure is located in an open lawn area near Hudson Lane. Concept C This concept is to keep the park as it is with the existing trees as the buffer between the residential properties and Orono Parkway. The native under- story should be allowed to grow to increase the buffer effect. Undesirable species should be removed and views into the woods be maintained.
