Appoint,by motion, Captain Ron Nierenhausen to the position of Police Chief.
Background/Discussion
Police Chief Brad Rolfe retired as Elk River's Police Chief effective December 30, 2014.
On December 15, 2014, the City Council directed staff to use an internal hiring process to identify and
recommend to the Council for approval.
The city administrator met privately with nearly every employee of the department to solicit feedback on
the organization and its leadership.
Following an internal posting for candidates, Captain Nierenhausen was the only candidate to apply.
A formal interview was held with the senior management team and they unanimously recommend Capt.
Nierenhausen for appointment as police chief.
The City Council will have interviewed the candidate in a special work session before the meeting.
If approved, Chief Nierenhausen will begin in pay grade 16, Step D and be eligible for Step E pending
successful performance evaluation in six months. A formal swearing-in and badge pinning ceremony will
take place at the regular council meeting on February 17, 2015.
Financial Impact
The position is budgeted for 2015.
