To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Date: February 12,2014
Subject: Director's Report
This report is a monthly highlight of our Department's activities informing the Commission on
items related to collaborations, strategic planning, staff changes/ development, and park operations
Houlton Farm Planning Committee
The first meeting of the Houlton Farm Planning Committee took place on Wednesday,January 28.
It was decided that the Committee would regularly meet on the last Monday of each month at 5:30
pm. The next meeting will be Monday,February 23. Both the FMR and the TPL will be attending
the meeting to discuss agenda items such as the conservation plan and hunting.
Rivers Edge Commons Park Expansion
Staff plans to meet with HKGi on February 12 to discuss design concepts incorporating the
expanded park area into the adjacent plaza, additional seating space, retaining walls and stabilization
of the sloped planting area between he parking terraces. Storm water enhancements will also be
discussed. We hope to have concepts for the Commission to review at the March meeting.
Annual Volunteer Recognition Program
A reminder that the annual Volunteer Recognition Program has been scheduled for Thursday,
March 5,2015 at Rockwood's. I hope all Commission members will attend.
Skate Park and Park Improvement Fund.
A budget of$35,000 was approved for skate park design in the Park Improvement Fund.
Recreation Manager Steve Benoit will be heading this project with a completion date slated for this
late summer.
Wayfinding Project
City Council provided staff direction with the Wayfinding Program. The gateway signage that the
Council decided for wayfinding is shown as Concept 2B in the wayfinding attachment. The
Wayfinding Program will help tie a consistent theme to all signage throughout the city and the city's
park system. We expect the first park sign from the wayfinding program will be at Hillside Park.
The actual concept and cost estimates for this park sign are being developed by staff and the
consultant.
