3.3. SR 05-03-2004River TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: MEMORANDUM Mayor and City Council Pat Klaers, City Administrator May 3, 2004 Consider Wellness Equipment Purchases *Item 3.3.* I have reviewed and discussed our city wellness room and equipment a number of times in the past few months with both Ron Nierenhausen and Michele Bergh. Earlier in the year I indicated that use of equipment reserves was the best funding mechanism for the city in purchasing new (and replacement) equipment. Both Michele and Ron strongly support the purchase of the elliptical cross trainer and the universal weight machine and I concur with their recommendation. With this equipment purchase, it is anticipated that our wellness equipment needs will be met for the next couple years. Recommendation It is recommended that the city authorize the expenditure of not more than $11,000 (plus tax) from equipment reserves for the purchase and installation of wellness room equipment as outlined in the attached proposal. S:~Council~Pat~2004~WcllncssPurc.doc l ver Police Department MEMORANDUM TO: Madam Mayor and Council FROM: Sergeant Ron Nierenhausen DATE: 04-27-04 SUBJECT: Wellness Room Equipment Purchase I would like to take this opportunity to update the Council on the ~vellness room and proposed purchase of new equipment. As a fitness instructor for the city I periodically evaluate current practices concerning wellness training and equipment. I believe that now would be the most appropriate time to update our current wellness room equipment. The newly reconstructed ~vellness room will no longer facilitate our current equipment inventory. In addition, xvith the expanding number of employees using the wellness room, it would be in the best interest of the city to upgrade at this time to ease congestion during peak times. I would propose that the city invest in a more user friendly "Universal" style equipment package vs. the individual free standing items xve now have. This would serve several purposes to include enhanced safety and functionality. More than one employee could utilize the "Universal" at a time while ensuring uncompromised safety. The "Universal" would better accommodate the limited space while at the same time allow freer movement for others. This purchase would be accomplished by trading in several original pieces of equipment obtained during the initial construction of the "old" city hall. We would contract with the vendor (Push Pedal Pull) to move any existing equipment from the temporary room (above the police department) to the new wellness room plus remove all items that will be used as trade-in. I believe this purchase would be a great asset to the city and should last into the significant furore. I would be happy to respond to any and all questions the council may have concerning this issue.
