Action Requested
Approve, by motion, the promotion of Patrol Sergeant Darren McKernan to the position of patrol
captain effective March 3, 2015.
Background/Discussion
The position of patrol captain has been vacant since the appointment of Ron Nierenhausen to police
chief on February 2, 2015.
The patrol captain is responsible for supervision of the Police Department Patrol Division consisting of
five sergeants and 17 patrol officers. Per the Police Department job description and qualifications for the
position, Sergeant McKernan is the only qualified supervisor for the position. He is exceptionally
qualified for the position.
Darren McKernan is a 15 year veteran of the Elk River Police Department. He was hired as a police
officer in 2000 and was promoted to sergeant on February 21, 2011. During his career he has served on
numerous specialized units and has had many additional responsibilities including:
Field Training Coordinator
SWAT Team Assistant Leader
Police Reserve Unit Liaison
Juvenile Detective
Financial Impact
The position is currently budgeted. Recommended pay grade 13 step E, which is the rate of the previous
patrol captain.
