Background/Discussion
On January 31, 2015, Elk River resident Amber Starr and her son Mason lost their cat Athena.
Amber spotted Athena in a storm sewer and called 911. Community Service Officer (CSO) Amy
Berglund arrived with a net and pole to retrieve the cat but was unsuccessful. The following day CSO Jeff
Prehatney, Wastewater employees Matt Stevens, Nick Flaherty, Kevin Beadles, and Dale Eckert, along
with other volunteers located and rescued the cat.
The cat was gone for four days and although she was dirty, scared, and dehydrated, she was uninjured.
This quote from Amber Starr sums it up. "This wouldn't have happened without the community," she
said. "Law enforcement didn't blow it off. People came out and helped. Some were neighbors. Some
came from as far as Minneapolis. The City of Elk River did all it could. It makes me proud to live in Elk
River."
