LAKE HANSKA
• - A 1800 acre lake of which approximately 200 acres was dredged
Maximum water depth was 6.5 feet and median water depth of 4 feet.
Project-started in 1978 with a feasibility-study conducted by TKDA, a - -------- - -consulting engineering firm
- In 1980, county began an annual levy of$140K. Fund grew to $880K
by 1985. Dredge was purchased in '85 for $140K plus $30-$40K for
a workboat and other equipment.
- Average water depth after dredging was 12 feet.
- Dredging program removed 2,900,000 cu. yards of sediment from
1985 to 1994.
- The project used county employees.

FIVE ISLAND LAKE
-A 1000 acre lake that was dredged to an average depth of 10-14 feet
Approximately 600 acres will be dredged in total.
- Project was started in 1990 with the support of a $400 bond issue.
Federal and State aid has further supported this project.
- In 1994 they received $400K from the federal Gov't. (EPA Clean Lakes
Fund)
- The first deposit site for silt was filled in 1990 and farmed in 1994 with
corn yielding 150 Bu. per acre.
- Dredging costs are running about $ .40 a cubic yard.
-The restored lake has increased property values significantly. Property
assessed in 1990 at $85K was reassessed in 1994 at $135K was later
sold at $185K.
• - Water quality has improved substantially.

*First dam erected in 1851 for lumber mill, grist mill 1855
• New hydroelectric dam built in 1915-1916 for power generation
• 1920-1970 Lake Orono becomes a haven for fish, wild life, and over 100 homes, as well as
being a major source of recreation to the community.
• DNR Map 1970-71, north end at 5' minimum depth (from Scout's Point on)
• Early `70 water quality and management issues start to rise
• 1971 Lake Orono Improvement Association, Inc. (L.O.I.A.) formed with four committees
• Pollution Control
• Water Safety
• Conservation
• Lake Level Regulation
• Initial public concerns regarding potential sedimentation problem develop by mid 1970's

• 1978 DNR ordered lake to be drained due to dam being classified as hazardous, 1979-1980
dam repair/reconstruction work done
• Problem accelerated in 1978-81 with dam construction and numerous major fluctuations of
water level
• Mid 1980's rapid population growth and improved access to the lake add up to major
increase in boat traffic on Orono
• Mid to late '80's much of North section 2' to 3' depth
• New islands appear
• Increased odors, algae, green surface scum and decreased game fish,
rough fish dominate lake
• 1989-1990 L.O.LA. starts discussion with City of Elk River and DNR regarding issues
• 1990 L.O.I.A. works with City of Elk River and County to develop and implement lake
safety ordinances
