Out of State Conference
On January 31 st through February 4th, 2000, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, will
be hosting their 30th annual Building Inspection Seminar. The classes offered at this
seminar provide new methods and techniques of code enforcement, which will play an
important role in improving the design and construction of our future buildings.
Continuing education is an effective way of acquiring the knowledge and experience
needed to fulfill the responsibilities associated with building inspection and code
enforcement. Therefore, it is vitally important that a building inspector develops the
skills needed to effectively see that new construction is carried out in accordance with the
approved plans and code requirements.
Attached is an outline of this seminar. The total cost of this seminar for travel expenses,
lodging, and the seminar itself, is estimated at approximately $1,200. This has been
budgeted for in the 1999 budget. Therefore, at this time I am asking the Mayor and City
Council to grant permission for me to attend this five-day seminar in Madison,
Wisconsin.

Out of State Conference
The Colorado Chapter Educational Institute will once again be hosting their continuing
education conference. This conference will be held on March 6TM through March 10th,
2000. I have attended this conference in previous years and have found it to be very
beneficial to my position with the City of Elk River as Building Official.
Provided for you with this memo is a copy of the outline of the conference. As you
review this information, you will notice that each day is filled with many areas of
continuing education. This year I would like to take the following classes; Tools for
Mgrs: Interpersonal tools for teams, 2000 International Building code, Legal Aspects of
Code Administration and Administration and Mgmt of the Building Functions. With
these classes I will be able to stay a step ahead of the code changes with the new 2000
International Building Code. Also, these classes will assist me with legal and
Administrative aspects of Building Code Enforcement.
Therefore, at this time I am requesting City Council approval to attend this conference.
The cost will be approximately $1,100. This amount was an approved budget item for
this year listed under out of state conferences.
