Overview
Jerry Palmer, an Elk River resident, would like to construct a memorial in
Lions Park in memory of a classmate that died while serving in the Korean
War. The planning of the memorial is in conjunction with the planning of a
class reunion in June. Mr. Palmer's hope is that classmates will want to
contribute time or materials to provide a lasting memory of his classmate.
On February 9, 2000, Jerry Palmer presented his ideas and concept design
for a memorial to the Park and Recreation Commission and has received
their endorsement.
Memorial Design
The proposed memorial would be situated around the existing flag pole where
the entrance path splits near the Boys and Girls Club/Lions Park parking lot.
The design integrates the Park entrance, the flag pole, and plantings. The

memorial consists of a circular planting bed surrounding the flagpole with a
walkway, a trellis with vines, benches and a memorial plaque. The intent of
the design is to create an intimate space with color, visual interest and a
place for reflection and memorial. Mr. Palmer will be in attendance to
further explain the intent and memorial plaque.
