Staff Update
DISCUSSION:
• The landfill gas plant is experiencing troubles with a main breaker for one of the engines.
Locating parts or replacement equipment has been very difficult. Waste Management
Renewable Energy is in the process of upgrading all breakers in their facilities based on
the difficulties of finding replacement equipment. Replacement parts were located and
have been ordered to repair the existing breaker. Staff will evaluate options to address
future breaker problems and plant operations.
• Working with Economic Development to identify additional sites that can be certified as
"Shovel Ready". Met with City staff and Zayo to determine fiber optic availability in Elk
River.
• Working with commercial customers to correct low power factor issues that are a result
of the large motors that are needed for their business operations.
• There was a large volume of calls this month from customer with concerns over their
energy use and associated costs.
• Participated in a meeting with the City of Elk River and Sherburne County staff to
discuss the possibilities of expanding the Landfill Gas to Electric Plant, the processing of
leachate, and the disposal of bio-solids from the new Waste Water Treatment Facility
under construction. The meeting was very helpful to all parties. The next major
milestone is to process some smaller samples of leachate in the new Waste Water
Treatment Facility. The date discussed for testing leachate treatment at the new facility
will be in September or October 2015.
