Action Requested
Review and discuss the proposed "Elk River Sustainable Community Award" program.
Background/Discussion
In honor of Earth Day on April 22, it has been proposed that a"Sustainable Community Award"
program be initiated in the City of Elk River which would commend sustainable actions within our
community by individuals, groups, and/or businesses. The city is host to numerous sustainability efforts
daily and those actions should be recognized. This program will act similarly to the "Volunteer of the
Month Award" and be based off of nominations by elected officials, staff, city commissioners,
community members, and groups.
The selected City of Elk River Sustainable Community Award nominee(s) are committed to representing
the "Powered by Nature" and "Energy City" themes of the City of Elk River through voluntary efforts in
one of the following categories:
• Increase in Recycling and/or Organics Recycling
• Energy Efficiency and/or Renewable Energy
• Green Space, Native Vegetation, Invasive Species Control, and/or Wildlife Habitat
Improvements
• Clean Transportation
• Water Quality Improvements and/or Stormwater BMPs
• Sustainability Education and/or Outreach
Nominations should be made for direct, hands-on efforts and the work completed should demonstrate a
benefit to the City of Elk River. The Energy City Commission will act as the selection committee.
Upon Council approval of the program, staff will begin promoting it with the intent of recognizing
recipients quarterly: February, May,August, and November.
