Background/Discussion In honor of Earth Day on April 22, it has been proposed that a"Sustainable Community Award" program be initiated in the City of Elk River which would commend sustainable actions within our community by individuals, groups, and/or businesses. The city is host to numerous sustainability efforts daily and those actions should be recognized. This program will act similarly to the "Volunteer of the Month Award" and be based off of nominations by elected officials, staff, city commissioners, community members, and groups. The selected City of Elk River Sustainable Community Award nominee(s) are committed to representing the "Powered by Nature" and "Energy City" themes of the City of Elk River through voluntary efforts in one of the following categories: • Increase in Recycling and/or Organics Recycling • Energy Efficiency and/or Renewable Energy • Green Space, Native Vegetation, Invasive Species Control, and/or Wildlife Habitat Improvements • Clean Transportation • Water Quality Improvements and/or Stormwater BMPs • Sustainability Education and/or Outreach Nominations should be made for direct, hands-on efforts and the work completed should demonstrate a benefit to the City of Elk River. The Energy City Commission will act as the selection committee. Upon Council approval of the program, staff will begin promoting it with the intent of recognizing recipients quarterly: February, May,August, and November. Residents, businesses, and organizations from Elk River are eligible. The Council and Mayor will honor the selected sustainability award recipients at a regular City Council meeting each quarter, as nominations are received, February, May,August, and November. The Energy City Commission will act as the selection committee. Eligibility and Criteria for the Award The City of Elk River Sustainable Community Award nominee should be committed to representing the "Powered by Nature" and "Energy City" themes of the City of Elk River through voluntary efforts in one of the following categories: ■ Increase in Recycling and/or Organics Recycling ■ Energy Efficiency and/or Renewable Energy ■ Green Space, Native Vegetation, Invasive Species Control, and/or Wildlife Habitat Improvements ■ Clean Transportation ■ Water Quality Improvements and/or Stormwater BMPs ■ Sustainability Education and/or Outreach The nominee will be considered based on initiative and good work achieved through the contribution. Nominations should be made for direct, hands-on, efforts. Nominees may be nominated by an individual, agency, corporation, or organization. The work completed should demonstrate a benefit to the City of Elk River. Tips for Completing the Nomination Form Your essay may want to address one or more questions, such as: • How many hours does the nominee work or volunteer towards sustainability per month? • Describe the need for the sustainability effort(s). • Did the nominee start a new program,use new methods to solve problems, initiate activities, or build collaboration with other organizations? Explain. • Describe the impact the nominee's service made to the community. You are encouraged to interview your nominee or get a quote from them on their thoughts about sustainability, and giving back to the community. Because this award program is ongoing, there is no deadline for submitting nominations. Applications are valid from 6 months from time of submission.
