The Master II Planning process ensures that any development within the park is appropriate and aligned with the overall objectives of the Master Park and Recreation Plan. iSite Description Woodland Trails Park is a 160 acre parcel of natural , diverse ',I , landscape. The park is located three miles northwest of downtown Elk River, adjacent to and north of the Elk River Golf Course. The eastern border of the park is adjacent to the City owned II railroad trail , that will eventually serve as a primary walking and biking trail . The north and west sides of the park are adjacent to large lot residences. The park is landlocked, except I for a 66' wide road easement at the southwest corner of the site, connecting to County Road 1 near County Road 32 . The following analysis map shows the general site conditions and surrounding III II uses . CREEK I ANALYSIS 1 • TOPOGRAPHY The topography within Woodland Trails Park is widely varied, from' the rolling wooded and open uplands to the virtually flat wetlands . The upland hills are generally 10 to 30 feet high with slopes ranging from 3% to 35%. The major wetlands occur at about elevation 940 . 0 ' and relate to the virtually flat creek that flows into the north edge of the site at elevation 942. 3 ' and out the south edge at elevation 939. 8' . SOILS I There are many different soil types within the park. The various soils do, however, fall into two general soil associations : I The first and predominant soil is the Zimmerman-Lino-Isanti-peat association . The general description of this soil is that I it occurs on nearly level to undulating topography and is acidic, windblown and sandy. The second soil is the Hayden-Braham-Emmert association. This is an undulating to steep sloped soil over limy, gray glacial till 411 mixed with red till or gravel , capped with fine sand. The following map shows the location of these soil associations ' within the park site. The following map shows the Woodland Trails site and relevant soil types as mapped in 1968 by the Soil Conservation Service. S I I 1 I • Woodland Trails Park Master Plan IThe Master Plan for Woodland Trails Park considers the 160 acre site to be an existing amenity. The design focuses on II acknowledging and appreciating the unique qualities that make the park an amenity. A key factor in appreciating the unique qualities of the park is I the design of an interpretive center. The center should be a simple structure to provide a place for people as well as entire classrooms to meet and learn about the park. The focus of the I center would be on the natural systems and overall ecosystem of the park. The center should have maps, models, and diagrams explaining I plants , soils and wildlife, and should relate the diagrams to actual trails and places within the park. ITHE TRAILS The internal trails of the park have different surfaces for II different uses . The primary and outer loop is paved with asphalt and is designed to accommodate bicycles and walkers . These trails are connected directly to the interpretive center, and III experiences along the way may vary from Oak forest communities to I a wetland walk across a floating boardwalk. The secondary trails are designed for walking only and the I surface would be unimproved or woodchips. These trails are located within the interior of the park to cause the least disturbance to wildlife. In the winter, they would serve as Igroomed cross-country skiing trails. ENTRIES ' There are three entries to the park. The main entry, designed for automobiles and pedestrians is located at the southwest corner of the site through the easement granted to County Road 1 . I The entry road follows an existing ridge around to the north, and ends in a recessed parking lot . The parking lot is adjacent to the interpretive center, that will serve as a major junction of I trails . A trail would follow along the south side of the entry road and would eventually be connected to a future Neighborhood Park to the west. I Other entries to the park occur along the City owned railroad trail . There are two shown, both are where the grade of the park is even with the trail , to more easily accommodate the transition I into the park. The location of the two entries also relates to future Neighborhood Parks to the east. There should be a trail • connection to them when they occur. I 411 Kiosks and Maps The Master Plan identifies locations for interpretive kiosks and park maps . The kiosks would be simple structures displaying information regarding wildlife, plant communities, soils, history or other aspects of the park. The information would be shown with simple diagrams and text, to maintain the interest of the park user. The park maps that are shown on the Master Plan are essential to a park of this scale. The maps should be simple and easy to read for reference to where you are within the park. Both the interpretive kiosks and park maps would provide adjacent I benches for reading and resting. Bridges There are two bridges shown within the park. They would serve bikers and walkers and would be connected to the asphalt trail . The span of the bridges will also have to support maintenance vehicles , to allow access throughout park. Floating Boardwalk 1 411 The floating boardwalk on the plan occurs between the two wetlands in the northwest portion of the park. The boardwalk is about 14 feet wide and 120 ' long. There would be bench seating and interpretive kiosks of the wetland along the walk . Overlook Structure An overlook pier is shown along the northern edge of the open water wetland. The Master Planning process ensures that any development within the park is I appropriate and aligned with the overall objectives of the Master Park and Recreation Plan. 1 Site Description Woodland Trails Park is a 160 acre parcel of natural, diverse Ilandscape. The park is located three miles northwest of downtown Elk River, adjacent to and north of the Elk River Golf Course. The eastern border of the park is adjacent to the City owned I railroad trail , that will eventually serve as a primary walking and biking trail . The north and west sides of the park are adjacent to large lot residences. The park is landlocked, except I for a 66' wide road easement at the southwest corner of the site, connecting to County Road 1 near County Road 32 . The upland hills are generally 10 to 30 feet high with I slopes ranging from 3% to 35%. The major wetlands occur at about elevation 940. 0 ' and relate to the virtually flat creek that flows into the north edge of the site at elevation 942. 3 ' and out the south edge at elevation 939. 8' . SOILS I There are many different soil types within the park. The various soils do, however, fall into two general soil associations : ' The first and predominant soil is the Zimmerman-Lino-Isanti-peat association . The general description of this soil is that ' it occurs on nearly level to undulating topography and is acidic, windblown and sandy. The second soil is the Hayden-Braham-Emmert association. This is an undulating to steep sloped soil over limy, gray glacial till mixed with red till or gravel , capped with fine sand. The following map shows the location of these soil associations ' within the park site. The following map shows the Woodland Trails site and relevant soil types as mapped in 1968 by the Soil Conservation Service. The design focuses on II acknowledging and appreciating the unique qualities that make the park an amenity. A key factor in appreciating the unique qualities of the park is I the design of an interpretive center. The center should be a simple structure to provide a place for people as well as entire classrooms to meet and learn about the park. The focus of the II center would be on the natural systems and overall ecosystem of the park. The center should have maps , models, and diagrams explaining 1 plants, soils and wildlife, and should relate the diagrams to actual trails and places within the park. ITHE TRAILS The internal trails of the park have different surfaces for I different uses. The primary and outer loop is paved with asphalt and is designed to accommodate bicycles and walkers . These trails are connected directly to the interpretive center, and 411 II experiences along the way may vary from Oak forest communities to a wetland walk across a floating boardwalk. The secondary trails are designed for walking only and the I surface would be unimproved or woodchips . These trails are located within the interior of the park to cause the least disturbance to wildlife. In the winter, they would serve as groomed cross-country skiing trails. ENTRIES IThere are three entries to the park. The main entry, designed for automobiles and pedestrians is located at the southwest corner of the site through the easement granted to County Road 1 . I The entry road follows an existing ridge around to the north, and ends in a recessed parking lot . The parking lot is adjacent to the interpretive center, that will serve as a major junction of I trails . A trail would follow along the south side of the entry road and would eventually be connected to a future Neighborhood Park to the west . II Other entries to the park occur along the City owned railroad trail . There are two shown, both are where the grade of the park is even with the trail , to more easily accommodate the transition I into the park. The location of the two entries also relates to future Neighborhood Parks to the east. There should be a trail . connection to them when they occur. I I 1 • Kiosks and Maps ' The Master Plan identifies locations for interpretive kiosks and park maps . The kiosks would be simple structures displaying information regarding wildlife, plant communities , soils, history or other aspects of the park. The information would be shown with simple diagrams and text, to maintain the interest of the park user. The park maps that are shown on the Master Plan are essential to a park of this scale. The maps should be simple and easy to read for reference to where you are within the park. Both the interpretive kiosks and park maps would provide adjacent , benches for reading and resting. Bridges There are two bridges shown within the park. They would serve bikers and walkers and would be connected to the asphalt trail . The span of the bridges will also have to support maintenance vehicles , to allow access throughout park. Floating Boardwalk , iThe floating boardwalk on the plan occurs between the two wetlands in the northwest portion of the park. The boardwalk is about 14 feet wide and 120 ' long. There would be bench seating and interpretive kiosks of the wetland along the walk. Overlook Structure An overlook pier is shown along the northern edge of the open water wetland.
