Receive information and provide direction with regard to moving the Independence Day Fireworks to
Orono Park.
Background/Discussion
At the April 20, 2015,work session, the City Council discussed a resident request to move the
Independence Day fireworks from Lion John Weicht Park to Orono Park.
Due to the short time period before the event,the Council expressed consensus that the event will be
held at Lion John Weicht Park this year.
Chief Nierenhausen estimates for 2015, the cost of additional policing services to be $8,232 if the
fireworks alone are held at Orono Park. The PD will accrue $3,270 in additional costs for the fireworks
this year at Lions Park. The net difference for policing is $4,962
Parks maintenance estimates their additional costs to be $4,255 which accounts for staffing, additional
portable toilets,portable lighting, and additional trash removal.
Street maintenance estimates additional labor costs of$1,315.
The total estimated additional expense for a fireworks only event at Orono Park in 2015 would be
$10,532.
