Approve, by motion, the expansion of the Metro Deer Management Zone 601 to encompass a larger area
of Elk River.
Background/Discussion
An outline of a deer herd reduction plan for the city parks was presented to City Council at a work
session on June 1. One of the discussion items during the work session was the expansion of the Metro
Deer Management Zone 601 to encompass a larger area of Elk River. Deer Area Management Zone 601
allows archery hunters to take an unlimited number of antlerless deer.
Like other metro communities, this is an opportunity to harvest unlimited antlerless deer in areas with
limited hunting opportunity to help reduce deer overpopulation.
We are receiving an increasing number of complaints from homeowners regarding damaged landscaping.
The natural forest regeneration in our parks has also suffered from high deer densities. We are also
developing a plan to open some of our parks to archery hunting. The expansion of Zone 601 would
significantly improve the effectiveness of this effort.
