2015 American Public Power Association Lineworkers Rodeo
DISCUSSION:
The 2015 APPA Lineworkers Rodeo was located in Sacramento, CA, and hosted by the
Sacramento Municipal Utility District this year. We had one apprentice lineworker,Aaron
White, compete at this event. The apprentice competition was comprised of five parts:
Event 1: Crossarm Relocation—The apprentice will relocate a wooden arm 90 degrees from
its original location. The apprentice will remove both the arm and brace bolt,
rotate the arm 90 degrees either direction, and reinstall using the same hardware.
Mean Time= 8 minutes
Drop Dead Time= 12 minutes
Event 2: Double Deadend Bell—The apprentice will change both polymer suspension
insulations out on a single-phase double deadend.
Mean Time=6 minutes
Drop Dead Time= 8 minutes
Event 3: Hurtman Rescue—An individual apprentice rescues a"hurtman"mannequin from
the top of a pole. Event staff will provide groundman support.
Mean Time=4 minutes
Drop Dead Time= 8 minutes
Event 4: Single Phase Conductor Tie In—The apprentice will remove the phase and neutral
conductors from the sheaves. Next, the apprentice will tie the conductors in the
neutral spool and phase insulator.
Mean Time= 8 minutes
Drop Dead Time= 12 minutes

Event 5: Written Test-This test encourages knowledge of safety rules at all times when
working in the field and during competitions, such as the Public Power
Lineworkers Rodeo. Questions come from specific sections of the 15th edition of
the APPA Safety Manual. A high score in this event is crucial for competitors
seeking"Overall Apprentice"recognition.
Drop Dead Time=20 minutes
An update of the event will be provided at the Commission meeting.
