Mayor & Council Salaries
In late 1998, Councilmember Farber requested that this issue be considered
in a timely fashion for wages in 2001. Additionally, Councilmember Motin
requested that some data be provided on comparable communities. Any
changes in City Council and Mayor wages needs to be done by ordinance and
prior to the election in order for it to be effective in 2001. Attached is a
sample ordinance that can be "filled in" and approved at the discretion of the
City Council.
A brief survey was faxed/e-mailed to a number of communities with similar
populations and, as necessary, some information was found in the most
recent League of Minnesota Cities salary survey. The results are compiled on
the attached survey summary. Also attached is some historical information
regarding City Council meetings in Elk River. The council should note two
things in regard to this information: 1) a number of the special meetings are
taking place either immediately before or immediately after regular council
meetings or are for such things as Chamber events, parades, volunteer
appreciation night, etc., and 2) it is well acknowledged that many additional
hours, other than meeting hours, are spent by the Mayor and City Council on
city business.

Section 202 - Elected and Appointed Officials
202.00 - Salaries of Mayor and Councilmembers
1. The salary of the Mayor of the City shall be $ per year,
payable in 26 bi-weekly installments.
2. The salary of the Vice Mayor of the City shall be $ per year,
payable in 26 bi-weekly installments.
The salary of each remaining Councilmember of the City shall be
$. per year, payable in 26 bi-weekly installments.
This Ordinance shall take effect and be in full force on January 1, 2001.
