Consider Hiring Information Technology Intern

The 2004 budget included funding for a full-time Information Technology Specialist.
Instead of hiring a full-me employee at this time, I would like to hire an intern for the
summer and then have available the balance of the budgeted funds for more skilled help on
a number of projects. This intern will have the duties and responsibilities as outlined on the
attached description. The following summarizes this request:
· Would hire intern for 40 hours per week for the months of June, July and August
· Would pay $15 per hour
· Would like to re-engage individual during school breaks
· Would use balance of budget for skilled consulting help
Action Requested
The Council is asked to approve hiring an IT Specialist Intern for the summer months with
funding coming from the 2004 Information Technology Budget.
Summer Intern: IT Support
Job Description:
Seeking summer intern pursuing degree in computer science or related technical
discipline. Under IT Coordinator's supervision, will perform a wide variety of duties in
support of the City's computer infrastructure. Assignments will include: hardware and
software installation, software troubleshooting, software upgrades, documentation, and
user support. Will participate in multiple upgrade projects rolling out new releases of
LaserFiche (the City's document imaging solution), Windows Server, and PsPortal (the
police interface to the state).
Education:
MUST BE CURRENT COLLEGE STUDENT, pursuing bachelor's degree in Computer
Science, Management Information Systems, Electrical and Computer Engineering,
Electronics Technology with Computer Emphasis or related technical discipline.
Required Skills: · Ability to provide basic microcomputer hardware and software repair, installation
and physical inventory control.
· Ability to understand and use computer diagnostic tools.
· Ability to understand computer hardware and architecture and the operating
systems in use.
· Ability to understand custom and shrink-wrapped applications.
· Ability to take and resolve help calls from end users.
