MEMORANDUM
TO:
FROM:
Mayor and City Council
Phil Hals, Street/Park Superintendent
DATE:
September 13, 2000
SUBJECT: Purchase of a Brush Chipper
I request Council's approval to purchase a new Vermeer Model I250 Brush
Chipper. In a typical year, the Street Department spends about 4 weeks
cutting brush along roadways and in parks. We have a smaller 1982
Morbark chipper that is slow and requires considerably more chain saw
preparation before it will process 4" to 6" diameter brush.
The Vermeer machine has a 110 h.p. diesel engine and should provide many
years of dependable service. We have done demonstrations with 3 different
manufacturers and feel that the Vermeer is best suited to our needs. All
three units are in the State of Minnesota bids and are priced as follows
(including tax): · Vermeer
· Scharber & Sons (Woodsman)
· Aspen Equipment Brush Bandit
$24,990.22
$26,171.31
$24,435.38
The funding for this purchase would be landfill abatement funds, because
the chipping of brush and small trees would reduce the volume of material
brought to the landfill and in mm, creates a recycled product that is provided
to the public free of charge.
Action Requested: City Council's authorization to purchase a Vermeer
Model 1250, 110 h.p. Brush Chipper for $24,990.22, which includes sales
tax.
