SAPLANNING\Terry Maurer\08 16 04 221st CC memo.doc -Hcmc1cut (+crY) ~ ,IL 8'IILDIDY MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Terry Maurer, City Engineer ~ DATE: August 16, 2004 SUBJECT: File No. 230000M-0325 221" Paving Quote As directed at last week's City Council workshop, we have solicited quotations from three contractors for the paving of the gravel portion of 221 st Avenue. As discussed last week, the quotations assume that the City Street Department will add the necessary gravel prior to paving and will do the gravel shouldering after the paving is complete. We solicited quotations from three contractors: Universal Enterprises of Mid-Minnesota, Inc.; Bauerly Companies, Inc.; Hardrives, Inc. Hardrives, Inc. was unable to submit a quote due to the amount of work in hand, so they passed on our solicitation to Magnum Company, LLC. We did receive back three quotations listed in the following table: Universal Enterprises, Inc. Bauerly Companies, Inc. (sp) Magnum Company, LLC $39,610.00 $40,921.00 $47.554.75 Universal Enterprises, Inc. has done a substantial amount of paving in Elk River this year; they were the contractor for the 2004 Overlay Project and also the Lions Park Parking Lot Improvements, as well as the paving subcontractor for the 4th Street project. Therefore, ifthe City Council decides to proceed with the paving of the 221 st Avenue, we would recommend awarding the contract to Universal Enterprises of Mid-Minnesota, Inc. in the amount of$39,610.00. As with all of our public improvement contracts, this is a unit price quotation, therefore, the contractor will be paid the total units of bituminous material used for the proj ect. That may be slightly more or slightly less than the bid amount. If you have any questions regarding this issue, I will be in attendance at your August 16, 2004 City Council meeting.
