Parks and Recreation Update
Attached please fInd the August 11, 2004 Parks and Recreation Commission agenda. As you
might observe, the agenda was very short. The Commission spent most of the evening in
work-session mode to review the Master Park Plan. The Commission reviewed the approved
neighborhood park plans, discussed any changes or new issues that have risen regarding each
plan, talked about future priorities, began an early discussion on the 2005 Capital
Improvements Budget, and set aside certain larger park plans for future agenda discussions.
The Commission also briefly discussed a draft policy regarding tobacco use in parks; this will
be scheduled for a formal recommendation for the September Commission meeting and will
be forwarded to the Council at some point in the future.
There are no action items for the Council to consider.

Hot T opic( s) of the Month
Internet registration is up and running. The web site is www.erpr.org. We have been
working on this for quite a while so it's nice to be able to advertise it and use it fInally. I
think this will be a great step for us. Fall program guide is complete and registration has
begun. Weare starting to work on Family Fright Night already so if you are interested in
helping with this or know of anyone who might be, please let us know.
July Programs
Programs running in July include T -ball, Lions Den Summer Camp, U Pass, Skating
Academy, Golf Lessons, Golf League, Wiggles and Giggles, SP ARI<', Great Games, Extra!
Extra!, Art Express, Mad Scientists, Just Imagine, Introductory Golf, Basketball Camp,
Tennis, Basketball League, Eager Elks T-ball Class, Eager Elks Soccer, Eager Elks Sports
Sampler, Field Trips, Tumbling, Cheerleading, Young American Self Defense, Red Cross
Babysitting, Flag Football Sports Camp, Floor Hockey Sports Camp, Entertainment in the
Park, and Art in the Park.
Special Marketing Efforts
As I mentioned last month we participated in the 4th of July Festival at Orono Park and the
Sherburne County Fair Parade. The parade was a fIrst for us and was a lot of fun. We let
the participants of one of our programs work with staff to decorate the float and invited
them to ride along and pass out candy. They had a blast doing so and we are excited to do it
again next year. We also sent out bank stuffers through the Bank of Elk River for our
Entertainment in the Park programming.
Facility Use
We reserved a total of 1,663.5 hours of use for city facilities. Over 1,000 of this is fIeld use.
About 250 hours is for Lions Park Center and the remainder is for miscellaneous park and
park shelter use.
Wellness Committee
The City of Elk River has a team participating in the Relay for Life on August 6th. Our next
event is a brown bag lunch event about natural health care. We also have the blood drive
scheduled for October.
