Background/Discussion Manufacturing is the backbone of Minnesota's economy thanks to the sector's strength, versatility, and innovation. Manufacturing contributes $43.9 billion to the state economy and accounts for 14% of Minnesota's gross domestic product. Manufactured exports bring nearly $20 billion into Minnesota's economy and generate 805,000 jobs. Most manufacturing jobs in Minnesota are concentrated in the following products: food products, computer and electronic products, fabricated metal products, machinery printing, medical devices, plastics, and transportation equipment. After the tough recession, manufacturing has made a substantial comeback in Central Minnesota. Manufacturing has added more employment to this region's economy than any other industry since 2010, gaining 3,676 jobs. This remarkable rebound accounts for almost 30% of total job growth. That growth was especially impressive from 2012 to 2013, when more than one in five new jobs were in manufacturing.
