Background/Discussion
The Whimsical Windmill was installed and unveiled on September 10. Since that time, staff has received
positive feedback via social media posts, emails, and phone calls. The windmill was inspected by the
artist reinforce concerns that the current location was the best possible to showcase the public art
initiative.
Staff is working with the Parks Maintenance Division to incorporate a nice backdrop for the windmill in
the future. The design will tie into the existing prairie gardens and utilize materials that are both
pollinator and monarch butterfly friendly. Additionally, the plan will allow for color throughout the
spring, summer, and fall. The plan also helps the grounds staff with their mowing and maintenance as
the plants will eliminate some mowing.
To help promote the public art initiative, city staff produced a video showcasing the story behind the
windmill. The video has been uploaded to the city's YouTube page.
Financial Impact
Funding for future maintenance needs is included in the 2016 budget.
