Action Requested
Provide staff direction with regard to Wayfinding Master Plan recommendation from the Parks and
Recreation Commission.
Background/Discussion
The Wayfinding Master Plan was presented to the Park and Recreation Commission on Tuesday,
November 17, for comments.
Commissioners would like to see the following changes made to the park signage:
1.Remove the wording Powered by Nature on the signs.
2.Add the words City of Elk River or city logo on the main body of the sign.
3.Preference is to use natural field stone as opposed to cultured stone or cut field stone.
4.Remove the aluminum base. Support the sign with two field stone columns, two concrete posts
or one of each.
5.Move international symbols to the main body of the sign.
6.Remove the blue waves element.
7.When not in mowed landscape, the elevation of the main body of the sign should be a minimum
of 42 inches. Native landscaping is preferred for most park settings.
8.Add address to the main body of the park sign.
9.Have signs made with high pressure laminate that Commission Anderson saw at the NRPA
Conference.
Financial Impact
Design changes recommended by Council will be sent to Visual Communications for a new cost estimate.
The understood goal of the Wayfinding Master Plan was to create a comprehensive, all-inclusive signage
plan that was consistent throughout the community. Park sign amendments may require additional
professional consultant fees.
