Approve, by motion, the purchase and replacement of nine trash and nine recycling receptacles.
Background/Discussion
The current concrete waste receptacles throughout downtown were put into place in 1987. Today, there
are currently five concrete trash receptacles and three additional Big Belly trash compacters. In addition,
there are two Big Belly recycling compactors.
The concrete receptacles have been deteriorating over the years as the openings do not have covers and
precipitation is easily introduced. The open receptacles also tend to attract insects and bees due to the
amount of food disposed of in the downtown area. Additionally, the appearance has grown outdated and
recycling options are severely lacking. Complaints of lack of waste receptacles and overflowing trash
have prompted staff to look into other options. Attached you can find a map showing removal and
replacement locations. The Downtown River's Edge group provided input in the past.
Staff is recommending the removal of the concrete receptacles and the purchase of nine trash and nine
recycling receptacles. Attached,you can view four possible options for purchase and their corresponding
prices ranging from$5,817.67 to $9,214.48. Staff proposes that this purchase come from the HRA
Downtown Plan Implementation fund and is requesting recommendation on the type of receptacle
purchase.
Financial Impact
The purchase of the trash and recycling receptacles would come from the 2015 HRA Downtown Plan
Implementation fund.
