Pay Out of Excess Accrual Vacation Time

Approve, by motion, the pay out of excess accrual vacation time to Sergeant Bryan Vita.
Background/Discussion
Detective Sergeant Bryan Vita has given notice that he plans to retire at the end of December. When
employees leave employment with the city, they are paid out their accrued vacation balance.
For active employees, our policy allows employees to carryover 240 hours of banked vacation time from
one year to the next and any balance over 240 hours is forfeited. Since Sergeant Vita plans to retire
before the end of the year, he hasn’t made plans to use the vacation time he would be subject to losing.
Our police department has been working to hire and train officers to get back to full staffing following
Chief Rolfe’s retirement, Officer Mathiowetz’s resignation, and Officer Besser’s death. We are very close
but still have three new officers in the field training process. Sergeant Vita is able to continue working for
a few more months but the loss of accrued vacation is a concern. Since the vacation would be paid upon
his retirement and he is working longer for our benefit, we would like to pay him for any vacation hours
he would be otherwise due to lose at the end of this year.
Financial Impact
There is no financial impact for the payout.
