5.A. WSCSR 11-05-2015 Sherburne Wright Cable Commission Equipment Report November 5thth, 2015 Trailer Audio Mixer We have made some upgrades to the audio system in the production trailer. The biggest is a new digital audio mixer to replace the analog one. This allows us to use 1 cat 5 cable to run up to 8 microphones from a remote location. Previously if we had a shoot in a gym or theater to cover a concert or event that needed to use many microphones or audio sources we had to run a separate XLR cable to each microphone location all the way back to the trailer. That distance can be up to 300 feet and putting out 300 feet of cable for each microphone can be very time consuming and messy with all those cables. Microphone cables are also very expensive and 2400 feet of cable adds up. Now we have to run only (1) cat 5 cable for that 300 foot span. We have a patch box at the end of the 300 foot run that we can plug the microphones or other audio inputs into inside the gym or theater. rC) (:) t 07, QCT` '"LCD 0jam © © epyo -_� - �./ O e <. « .. •= a . site 1°416 - (1) 0 •i; 4$ .4 4 rte...# •y='�y-may r 1 The mixer also has many other features that have greatly increased our production capabilities such as audio limiters, equalization, routing, compression and special effects. We are still exploring all its new features and are looking forward to using on upcoming trailer productions. Most importantly this mixer allows us to better work with the sound production companies that many cities use at their concertin the park series. We have covered concerts in Elk River at their riverside park, in Big Lake at the Lakeside Park and Buffalo where they use professional sound companies to mix the featured band's sound. We need to interface our trailer with their audio equipment and this new mixer allows us to do that. Cable Runs We also upgraded our ability to run longer runs of camera cables. Frequently at events like football games, girls and boys basketball, hockey and baseball we have to run very long lengths of cable to our camera locations. Without getting too technical, it can be difficult to run high definition cable for a long distance without having devices to amplify the signal. We installed a device called an "HD-SDI Repeater" on all our trailer camera inputs so that we can now run the length of cable necessary when we cover events in football stadiums and other large event centers. gtt 4 it ti 'M 1 A p 2 Network Attached Storage One of the challenges we have had after shooting video either with the trailer or with a camcorder is archiving the footage after we use it to edit or produce a program. HD footage can take up a fair amount of storage space. We originally tried to use portable drives but we've had issues with those such as drive failure. To address this we have added a NAS or network attached storage to both the trailer and also for footage that we produce individually. Video footage that is archived can be repurposed for future productions. This can be valuable especially during the seasonal changes when we need footage of an event or area in a city but can't go out and shoot something new. We have also discussed helping Elk River production staff archive video footage that they shoot for use in future productions like City Works. We will be assisting them with implementation of this soon. Cities HD Upgrade Status We have almost finished with the initial control room upgrades in Maple Lake. We still need to meet with the Maple Lake cable caster for training. We upgraded the TriCaster, audio equipment, monitors and presentation equipment interface.
