Background/Discussion
Trees beautify the environment, enhance property value, provide shade, and produce oxygen, but they
must be maintained to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The Street Division conducts a regular
trimming rotation of all city trees in the public right-of-way.
Trees are trimmed in a way that does not deter growth, but which removes branches and limbs that pose
a threat to public safety, either because limbs hang above the road surface or foliage interferes with traffic
signs or overhead utilities. Sometimes trees have to be replaced if they have overgrown the area or have
roots that lifted the sidewalk and/or curb.
The presentation includes pictures of tree overgrowth in the Ridgewood Development, an area that
generates considerable public comment. This presentation is an overview of the program in the event
Councilmembers are contacted by affected residents.
