Issue
The Economic Development staff and the Chamber of Commerce are coordinating Elk
River's 2004 MN Manufacturing & Technology Week event.
The attached flyer highlights this year's event scheduled for Tuesday, October 19, 2004.
The event will include tours of Solors Options Axis and Metal Craft Machine & Engineering
and a luncheon/keynote speaker at Lions Park Center. The event is being promoted in the
following ways:
. October Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce Newsletter
. News & Events page of the City's Website
. ERtV Channel 12
. Department of Employment & Economic Development (DEED) Web site on the
MN Manufacturing & Technology Week Event Calendar
. 100 flyers sent to Elk River manufacturers, local bankers, DEED representatives,
and other key individuals
In addition to the event, staff has coordinated the following items:
. Full page ad thanking Elk River manufacturers (will appear in the October 13'" issue
of the Star News)

. Economic Development booth rotated weekly among local banks the first, second,
and fourth week in October (booth reserved for City/Chamber event the third week)
Recommendation
In recognition of the above activities, staff recommends that the City Council consider
proclaiming October 18-22, 2004 as MN Manufacturing & Technology Week in Elk River.
City Council and EDA members are strongly encouraged to attend the October 19th event.

October 18 - October 22, 2004
Manufacturing and technology intensive industries are a dynamic part of Minnesota's
prosperous economy, and promotion of this sector's strength, success, and high
quality of life is an integral part of economic development in Minnesota; and
Manufacturing technology provides skill, high wage jobs which significantly
contribute to Minnesota's high standard of living and economic vitality; and
Manufacturing technology has the second largest total payroll of any business sector
in Minnesota, providing $23 billion in 2000 wages; and
Manufacturing and technology intensive industries employ nearly one sixth of the
state's non-farm workforce. Since 1990 Minnesota's technology intensive
employment grew 18%; and
Manufacturing and technology employees in Minnesota earn an average of 31
percent more than other Minnesota private sector employees; and
The manufacturing and technology sector employment grew 2.9 percent nationally
between 1990 and 2000, while in Minnesota it actually increased 17.7 percent (an
estimated total of nearly 510,000 jobs)
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL YED that I, Stephanie Klinzing, Mayor of the City of Elk
River, do hereby proclaim that the week of October 18 - October 22, 2004 shall be observed as:

Join keynote speaker Art Sneen, Founder and President of the
Manufacturers Alliance. For the past 15 years, Mr. Sneen has
developed the Manufacturers Alliance as an educational
association for hundreds of local manufacturers in Minnesota.
Mr. Sneen will outline the trends that are occurring in the
manufacturing sector, the changes and improvements that have
been implemented by manufacturers and the challenges that
manufacturers will face in the near future. Mr. Sneen brings
hands-on experience that includes positions in management,
operations and engineering in the manufacturing industry and
has used this experience to establish the Manufacturers Alliance
as a resource for continued education in the manufacturing industry.
The City of Elk River and the Elk River Area Chamber
