I spent a lot of time this winter educating myself. After I finished the City Works Sewer video and
watched it, I decided I really need to spend some time to learn how to make these videos interesting.
There is a ton of information online for documentary film making, as well as a vast array of documentary
videos. YouTube is an amazing resource for amateur and semi-pro video producers. Producers with
limited resources and equipment are making some entertaining and informational programs. That's the
approach I think I need to take with these videos. I want our videos to be less of a bland informational
video and more of a documentary with multiple interviews of real people, real situations, not so stiff and
monotone. A few of the sites I've been looking at are Lynda.com, I signed up for the free 30 day trial,
most of what Lynda has is technical how to use the software and not theory, but I was still able to learn
a few new things about Adobe Premiere Pro. Video University seems to be centered around building a
video business, at least that's where they make their money from, but there is a vast selection of
multipart articles, and forums with a wide variety of subjects. Including a documentary film making
series. Indiewire,Video Maker, Social Media Today, there is a lot of information out there.
I signed up for a MACTA conference at the end of this month, Boyd Huppert's Storytelling. It promises to
be very educational. But what's also interesting is with the new google search parameter"storytelling," I
was amazed at the amount of educational material available.
Now with this information, I have already scheduled my next video shoot. On Monday the 8th we start
taping for the Public Safety video in Big Lake. Chief Scharf is an engaging individual. My plan is to shoot
all dialog in a patrol car with two cameras, one on Chief Scharf and one out the front window while
patrolling. The Chief is very good at ad-lib and will be able to speak and expand on each point. He
provided all the bullet points then I added a few items then sent the points to Ashleigh in Delano and
she was able to greatly expand and add context to each bullet point. Also in the plan is to ride with an
officer and to interview the Mayor of Delano to cover contract police protection.
After the Police video I'm moving on to the Fire Department and have already started working on a
rough draft script with Ashleigh and Delano Fire Chief Van Lith.
I'd like to get both done before Summer Madness!
In other news. We located a topper for the pickup. Here we are parked outside the Elk River Ice Arena.

Once it gets a little less wintery out, Bill and I are going to set it up for camera shoots. Also we are
looking at LED flood lighting for Movie in the Park teardown.We upgraded the trailer as well. Earlier this
month we had a furnace installed in the Production trailer. It's a remarkable difference,on extremely
cold days I can start the furnace at the shed and have it warming the trailer as we drive to our event. It
doesn't take very much time at all to bring the temp up to a comfortable level.
Here's a couple of pictures of Jake from Elk River and me operating camera at a hockey game. The guy
behind Jake if from WCCO and was there taping an incredible Edina player for a story they were doing.
