EDSR 06-10-2002 • Item if 5 Oty of Elk 4., River MEMORANDUM TO: Economic Development Authority FROM: Heidi Hall, Economic Development Assistant DATE: June 10, 2002 SUBJECT: Strategic Industrial Marketing Activities Update Strategic Industrial Marketing Plan Update At last month's EDA meeting, Anita Duckor of Duckor & Associates was hired to complete an update of the Strategic Industrial Marketing Plan. Staff has been working with Ms. Duckor to update the plan and the action steps that will be used to foster • economic development within the City of Elk River beyond 2002. The updated plan is tentatively scheduled to be presented for consideration by the EDA at its August 12, 2002 meeting. During June and July, staff and Ms. Duckor will, among other duties, be completing the following activities: • Interviews with pending and lost clients, key accounts, advertising sponsors, and community leaders • Tours of surrounding communities' industrial and/or business parks in order to complete a competitive analysis In 1999, a marketing committee was formed to assist in the original plan's development, which included the following members: • Jim Barthel • Chris Carlson • Dr. David Flannery • Renee Sande • Gary Santwire • Jim Simpson • Daryl Thompson • Staff will attempt to reassemble the marketing committee and is open to suggestions from the EDA on potential new members. Award Nominations The City's 2001 Strategic Industrial Ad Campaign was nominated and awarded the Economic Development Association of Minnesota's (EDAM) Best Advertising Campaign award. Staff will be presented with the award on June 26, 2002 at EDAM's summer conference. The City's Communication Strategy & Brand Plan was nominated for the League of Minnesota Cities' (LMC) Communications award. Awards will be announced at the LMC Annual Conference,June 18-21, 2002. Article In the May 27, 2002 MN Real Estate Journal article "Public-Private Communication Crucial for Economic Development", David Piggott discusses the advantages of strengthening the communication lines between the private and public sectors when dealing with economic development.
