Product Offering Strategy The Director of Economic Development will provide a report regarding industrial land development following the update of marketing activities. Customer Feedback Survey Staff worked with Duckor&Associates to develop a Customer Feedback Survey that will be distributed via e-mail and/or regular mail to past and present clients. The survey will be designed by Tammy Miller Design and available for review at the December EDA meeting. I I. Competitive Strategy Staff has continued to add to the existing Competitive Analysis file,which includes articles and general information about development projects and marketing of competing communities. • Strategic Industrial Marketing Activities Update November 12,2002 Page 2 of 2 • I I I. Key Account/Lead Generation Strategy Staff met with the commercial lenders of all branches of the First National Bank of Elk River to present an overview of the services provided by the Economic Development Department in order to strengthen the partnership between the bank and the City in completing industrial development deals. Attached is the updated key account schedule. IV. Promotions & Advertising Strategy Inquiries Staff has continued to track all commercial and industrial inquiries that have passed through the Economic Development office. The attached Industrial Prospect Report summarizes the types of companies that staff is currently working with. Economic Development Web Page Staff met with Tammy Miller Design to continue the development of the Economic Development web page,which is located within the City's web site at www.ci.elk- river.mn.us. In addition to the interactive map of available industrial sites, the web page will include testimonials on business development and expansions. 2003 Ad Campaign Staff met with Tammy Miller Design to continue preparation for next year's Strategic Industrial Advertising Campaign. Initial plans include featuring a new series of manufacturers. • MN Real Estate Journal North by Northwest-Market Update Conference Staff will attend this conference,which will be held on November 22nd. The event will feature development opportunities in Wright,Anoka, and Sherburne Counties. Developers, professional site selectors, brokers and local CEOs and CFOs have been encouraged to attend. The attached event brochure lists the featured speakers,including Elk River's City Attorney,Peter Beck. Sherburne County is sponsoring this event on behalf of the cities of Becker,Big Lake, and Elk River. Elk River will receive a free 1/4 size ad and article featured in a special insert coinciding with the conference. MN Manufacturing&Technology Week- Oct. 21-25, 2002 Staff partnered with the Chamber of Commerce in sponsoring this year's MN Manufacturing&Technology Week events,which included tours of NRG, Great River Energy (GRE), the new Elk River Landfill Gas-to-Electric Facility, and SoftPac. In addition, Steve Shurts of Split Rock Energy provided a keynote presentation regarding the energy industry and its effect on business. The tours were sparsely attended, despite local/statewide advertising efforts and personal invitations. The City sponsored a full-page "Thank You" ad recognizing all Elk River manufacturers, which appeared in the October 23`d issue of the Elk River Star News. In addition, staff interviewed with the Star News for the October 30`'' article entitled"City Recognizes Manufacturers". • Strategic Industrial Marketing Activities Update November 12,2002 Page 3 of 3 Staff also displayed an exhibit featuring photos of several Elk River manufacturers and a "Thank You" listing of all manufacturers. The exhibit was displayed at the following locations during MN Manufacturing&Technology Week: Monday The Bank of Elk River Tuesday Great River Energy-Chamber/EDA luncheon Wednesday First National Bank of Elk River Thursday TCF National Bank Friday American National Bank Staff requests the EDA's input on future Manufacturing&Technology Week events. Staff proposes that next year the booth be rotated throughout the local banks during the full month of October for greater visibility. V. Public Relations Strategy Sportech Article Please see the attached Sportech article. Energy City Approximately 100 people attended the Oct. 22nd Elk River Landfill Gas-to-Electric Facility Open House, organized by staff and Elk River Municipal Utilties. Attendees included U.S. Senate candidate Jim Moore and Congressman Mark Kennedy. • The Energy City web site is in the process of being redesigned along with the Energy City brochure. Staff will continue to work on these items with Steve Rohlf, the web site designer, and the brochure designer. Upcoming PR Article Staff is working with MCPorter Marketing Communications to finalize and article to be featured in the November MN Real Estate Journal Leasing Guide. An"update" newsletter is also being developed for Elk River manufacturers. VI. Strategic Partnership Strategy Downtown Revitalization Project Staff and Ehlers &Associates worked with MetroPlains to negotiate a pre-development agreement for the revitalization of downtown. The HRA accepted the pre-development agreement on Oct. 28`h. The agreement provides the developer exclusive rights for the next six months to develop site plan feasibility of a redevelopment project. VII. Business Retention Strategy Business Retention Program Staff is working to develop a schedule for business retention visits over the next two years. Rather than conducting a formal Business Retention survey,it was recommended in the marketing action plan that one or two EDA representatives and staff conduct informal breakfast or lunch meetings with each manufacturer to discuss their needs. • Strategic Industrial Marketing Activities Update November 12,2002 Page 4 of 4 • The attached 2003 business retention program schedule reflects those companies who did not participate in the 2002 survey. Sept. 2002 Prospect- Pump and compressor (liquid/gas) company,located in metro area,requires land for up to 30,000-sqft building. STATUS: Forming advisory team to provide direction on ramping up to high-volume production and raising equity investment. May 2002 Prospect—Local manufacturer of solid-state batteries,requires land for up to 100,000-sqft building (lease). STATUS: In process of raising next round of equity investment and planning staged growth. Oct. 2001 Prospect—Non-profit packaging, assembly and light manufacturing employment service for adults with disabilities, requires land for up to 10,000-sqft building. STATUS: Referred to Gary Santwire and John Weicht regarding smaller sites and building construction. July 2001 Prospect—Precision machining company, located in the northwest metro area,requires land for up to 20,000-sqft building expansion/relocation.
