ELK RIVER ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
TO: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
FROM: WILLIAM RUBIN, ED COORDINATO
DATE: JANUARY 4 , 1994
SUBJECT: ESTIMATED JOBS IN ELK RIVER
One element of the 1994 Work Program was to attempt to estimate
the number of jobs in Elk River. The Minnesota Department of
Jobs and Training assisted in this endeavor. The preliminary
findings are as follows:
As of June, 1993, there were approximately 5,662 jobs
(covered by unemployment insurance) in Elk River.
- This compares to 11,823 jobs in Sherburne County for the
same period. In short, Elk River possesses approximately
48% of all jobs in the County that are covered by
unemployment insurance.
- These estimates do not include persons who are
• self-employed or work only on a commission basis .
Four major categories manufacturing, wholesale/retail
trade, services, and government comprise just over 79% of
the estimated jobs in Elk River. State-wide, these four
categories comprise about 85% of the jobs .
- Elk River's manufacturing base is on par with the
state-wide estimate of 17 . 8% for similar occupations .
However, nearly 63% of Sherburne County' s manufacturing
jobs are located in Elk River.
- State, local, and federal government jobs comprise nearly
19% of all jobs in Elk River and about 93% (998 of 1,073
jobs) of the government jobs are attributable to "local"
government. By definition, the School District is
included in this category as well as County employees.
With Elk River being the .County seat, one would expect a
larger than average number of employees in the "local
government" category.
Service jobs comprise nearly 18% ( 1,009 of 5,662 ) of the
Elk River jobs; this compares to a state-wide average of
27 . 65% of all state-wide jobs . Likely professions under
the category of "services" include auto repair and
services, miscellaneous repair services, motion pictures,
health services, legal services, hotels, personal
services, and business services, etc.

Equal Opportunity Housing and Equal Opportunity Employment
Wholesale and retail trade comprises the largest job
411 category in Elk River with nearly 25% . Typical retailers
include food stores, automotive dealers, restaurants,
general merchandise stores , and apparel stores, etc. A
typical wholesaler may include a machinery and equipment
wholesaler, industrial supplies wholesaling, an electronic
parts wholesaler, frozen foods wholesaling, and beverage
wholesaling, etc. The state-wide average for wholesale
and retail jobs is estimated at nearly 24%.
