SUBJECT: PROSPECT STATUS REPORT
The following is a summary of new industrial and commercial
prospects that have expressed an interest in locating in the
City of Elk River since the last EDA meeting.
NEW PROSPECTS
1 . Power Generation Service - This is an Anoka Manufacturer
that requires a new or existing 20,000 to 30,000 square
foot facility. The company currently employs 25 persons .
Information on the Elk River Industrial Park as well as
incentive programs were sent to the company. It is hoped
that a meeting with company representatives can be
arranged in the near future.
2 . Water Laboratories - This is an existing Elk River
• company that is officed out of the multi-tenant building
at east Main Street and Gates Avenue. Due to continued
growth, the company seeks additional office and laboratory
space.
3 . Electronics Manufacturer - Staff was in contact with an
individual that has developed a prototype electronic
device that is intended for the baseball market. The
device is an electronic umpire that "calls" the strike
zone and registers the velocity of a pitched ball . This
device, in turn, frees up the need for a catcher and an
instructor ordinarily required to work with a pitcher.
The company seeks working capital and eventually
manufacturing space. The company obtained information on
the Elk River programs and was put in touch with the
Initiative Fund.
4 . Discount-Used Clothes Store - Staff received an inquiry
from an individual who operates a store similar to Good
Will Industries. The store is called Chaps Store and it
is located in Circle Pines . The caller was seeking 6,000
square feet of discounted retail space to open a store in
Elk River.
5 . Champion Auto - As some Commissioners may be aware, the
Elk River Champion Auto store may be a prospect for the
720 Dodge Avenue N.W., Elk River, Minnesota 55330 (612) 441-7420
• former Elk River Hardware space which was vacated at the
end of March. However, Champion Auto is in a lease that
runs to late 1994 . Champion seeks to sublease this space
in order to move into the larger hardware store space.
Information on the existing space was shared with City
staff.
PREVIOUS PROSPECTS
1 . Perf-form Products, Inc.
Staff was disappointed to learn that this Big Lake
Township manufacturer decided to acquire an existing
building in Big Lake rather than construct a new one in
Elk River. Spring marks the busy time of year for this
company and the owner did not feel he could concentrate on
a construction project and successfully run his company.
2 . Indy Lube - Staff was in contact with this Indiana-based
ten-minute oil change company. Staff understands that the
company has an aggressive expansion program for Minnesota
and Elk River is among the candidate cities. Staff
further understands that Indy Lube has retained Advance
. Resources for Development for the Minnesota expansion. In
addition, the company is working locally with Gary
Santwire.
