The weather this spring has cooperated this year. This has allowed for recreational spring
programs and Youth Athletic Association to begin using athletic field facilities on time this
season.
April Programs

• Eager Elks All Sorts of Sports
Skate Park
Spohn Ranch is currently developing the design for a new skatepark at Orono Park utilizing
feedback received from the public at both the initial community meeting as well as the
Facebook page created specifically for the project. This design will then be presented at a
second community engagement meeting which will be held the last week of May at the Elk
River High School.
Free Little Library
In 2015 three Free Little Libraries were installed in Elk River Parks including Lion John
Weicht Park,Mississippi Oaks Park by Spectrum School,and Trott Brook Barn Park by a
Girl Scout Troop. Free Little Libraries are a"take a book,return a book"gathering place
where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Free
Little Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book(or two)
and bring back another book to share.

When the Parks and Recreation Commission approved the libraries they requested that staff
report back in a year with an update on any maintenance issues and if the groups are still
maintaining them. From a maintenance standpoint there have been no issues with the Free
Little Libraries. Staff is currently reaching out to the groups to determine how much the
local neighborhoods are utilizing the libraries.

Hot Topic(s) of the Month
The "Members Only" Spring Fling was held on Friday, April 29. Invitations were issued to
421 paid Activity Center members. Attendees enjoyed a slice of pie and great entertainment.
Earlier in the month students from Spectrum High School met with seniors at the Activity
Center for a program called "Tech Tutors". Students helped the seniors learn how to
navigate Chromebooks and offered one-on-one help. The students plan to return in the fall
with more tech programs including how to use Facebook.
April recorded attendance was 2,315 for an average of 110 per day.
