Elk River Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING TO: FROM: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Eric Volk-Water Superintendent John Dietz—Chair Al Nadeau—Vice Chair Daryl Thompson—Trustee MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER: May 10, 2016 6.1e SUBJECT: Staff Update DISCUSSION: • Delivered seven new residential water meters, and three commercial water meters. • Sealed the water meter, and took curb stop ties from seven water services. • Went on eight service calls • Completed 25 BACTI/Total Chlorine Residual Samples o All confirmed negative for Coliform Bacteria. • Completed 20 routine fluoride samples o All samples met MDH standards. o Completed one MDH fluoride validation sample • Completed five nitrate samples per the MDH routine testing schedule, still have two samples to complete for the year. • Well#3 is up and running. The water operators worked very hard to put everything back together and get the chemical settings correct. The project will significantly extend the life of the well and the filter. We continue to move forward with the development and design of the infiltration basin. • The operators continue to get things buttoned up in the wells in preparation for the busy season. • We participated in Drinking Water Week May 1-7. Michelle Canterbury worked hard to ensure we had the right materials for the week. She worked with the American Water Works Association(AWWA)to get the flyers, and all the media announcements for the week. She also worked with Cathy Dalchow from City Hall to make sure the materials were on the local cable channel. We will be participating in Drinking Water Week on an annual basis. I attached the flyers used for Drinking Water Week. • I am still working to find the most prudent solution for the repair of Well#7. There are a few variables we are looking at. The current motor is very expensive to replace. We might be able to replace the motor and the pump with a combination cheaper than just replacing the current motor. - i P OIVEFIED BY r3 ., Page 1 of 2 NATURE Reliable Public Power Provider P OWERED To SERVE 230 • The building permit for the WTP #7 Expansion should be issued by the building department within the next week. • We received a Source Water Protection(SWP)grant from the Minnesota Department of Health(MDH)to seal an unused well behind the cinema building on Main Street. The grant will cover 100%of the well sealing. The only costs we will incur are the costs of any permits. The owner of the building will be responsible for any equipment located inside the building that is utilized to control the well. • I attended the American Water Works Association(AWWA)Water Matters! Fly-In. I attended the conference with Pat Shea from the City of St. Cloud. We met with staff members from Senator Klobuchar's office, and Representative Walz and Peterson's office. Together we represented the Minnesota Section of the AWWA rallying support for a few programs. I attached a couple pictures taken of us with the senators. o Support full authorized funding of$35 million for the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act(WIFIA) o Support at least$1.3 billion in revolving funds for both water and wastewater revolving funds. o Remove the annual cap of$10 million for municipal bonds • We washed and started filling the Johnson Street Water Tower on April 26, 2016.
