Staff Update
DISCUSSION:
• As part of the Elk River Business Expo survey, staff compiled some interesting statistics
on electric vehicles. Of the 235 respondents 97 of them were moderately or very likely to
purchase an electric vehicle. Staff also asked which model they would purchase if they
bought an electric vehicle; the most popular car makes were: the Tesla(20), followed by
Not Sure(9), Toyota Prius(6), Ford(3), and Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt(2).
• Working with staff to coordinate the information gathering for the Cost of Service Study.
The initial data request is fairly lengthy and covers all areas of the utility. The data is
being provided to Dave Berg Consulting and will be discussed in detail at the initial
meeting scheduled for May 13, 2016.
• The Energy City Commission and the City of Elk River fleet staff toured the E-Ride
manufacturing facility in Princeton, MN. The small utility vehicles are very flexible and
could be incorporated into the fleet of vehicles. The specific areas that may benefit from
the use of an electric vehicle are Parks and Recreation and possibly facilities. The
vehicles are street legal,but can only go 35 miles per hour. They can operate on about
fifty cents per day of operation.
• Met with ISD 728 about their system wide energy use. They are working to benchmark
all of the school buildings and compare them to other schools in the state. They are a bit
concerned their cost per square foot for energy is higher than most other school districts
and are looking for ways to reduce costs through efficiency programs and behavior of
facilities staff
• Attended the Minnesota Legislative Rally with MMUA. Met will Nick Zerwas and Mary
Kiffineyer and briefly discussed the expansion of the Utilities Commission from three

members to five members and thanked them for their support. Also communicated that
we appreciate them being a valuable voice for public power in Minnesota.
